Top Ranked IFL QB joins Sharks
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Sharks announced today that quarterback Damien Fleming has signed with the Jacksonville Sharks for the 2017 season.
Damien Fleming (6’3”,220) will enter his first year with the Jacksonville Sharks and his second in arena football. In 2016, Fleming played in 14 regular season games and completed 241 passes for 2,745 yards and 57 touchdowns. During his rookie season, he ranked second among IFL quarterbacks in yards per game (196.1).
Prior to his professional career, Fleming attended Florida A&M where he spent all four years, completing 61% of his passes while throwing for 6,954 yards and 50 TDs. As a junior year, Fleming was a Preseason MEAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year. Leading the team, Fleming passed for 1,016 yards, throwing 106 passes and six touchdowns in ten regular season games. He was also the team’s fourth leading rusher, scrambling for 215 yards on 62 attempts and scoring two TDs in 10 games.
In 2012, Fleming became the first Rattler QB to start in two consecutive seasons since 2003 and he is the first FAMU QB to throw more than 2,000 yards in a single season since 2004. He wrapped up the season with 214 completions in 308 attempts and 16 TDs. On the ground, Fleming finished the season with 86 carries for 194 yards with one touchdown and earned Second Team All-MEAC honors. Fleming also won MEAC Offensive Player of the Week honors that same year for his performance in a game against Delaware State as he threw for a season high of 399 yards by completing 81% of his passes and three touchdowns. His freshman year, Fleming broke into the starting line up mid-season, throwing for 1,622 yards on 131 completions and 11 touchdowns. As a freshman, Fleming contributed to the Rattlers first-ever win over South Carolina State in ten seasons. Fleming threw for a season high of 297 yards, completing 85% of his passes. The Rattlers scored two fourth quarter TDs to defeat the Bulldogs, 27-24.
A native to Jacksonville, Fla, Fleming attended football powerhouse Ribault High School and excelled in both football and basketball. His senior season, he passed for 2,700 yards with 25 TD passes and six rushing TDs. He earned First Team All-Coast honors his senior year.
