ATLANTA, GEORGIA – The National Arena League is proud to announce the league’s recipients of the Week Three Players of the Week. As the NAL gets to the quarter mark of the season, the league selected the following winners for Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Warren Smith Jr. (QB, Lehigh Valley Steelhawks)
The true signs of a team leader, are the ways you respond to adversity. The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks entered the Shark Tank of Jacksonville, Florida this past weekend and were up against one of the league’s most intimidating defensive units. Down 36-19 at half, Smith Jr. put the team on his back to tie the score at 43-43 mid way thru the 4th quarter. Although not able to complete the full comeback, Smith Jr. finished the game 27-39 for 257 yards and five touchdowns. Smith leads the league in completion percentage (68.9) on the season and is second in passing yards (631)
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Marvin Ross (DB, Jacksonville Sharks)
Big time players make big time plays when it counts. The Sharks Marvin Ross is no stranger to being the hero this season. Two big time interceptions in his teams own endzone helped seal the victory and keep the Sharks undefeated on the young season. The key moment of the game against Lehigh Valley occurred in the 4th quarter. With his team regaining a lead at 50-43 late in the fourth quarter, and the Steelhawks driving, Ross virtually came out of nowhere on what looked to be a sure Touchdown pass by the Steelhawks to undercut the receiver in the endzone and intercept the would be score. Ross finished the game 6.5 tackles, two interceptions, and a pass breakup.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nick Belcher (K, Jacksonville Sharks)
The league’s top kicker thus far on the season has consistently put up solid games, so it was just a matter of time before he would land a weekly honor. In his team’s 57-43 victory over the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks, Belcher was 6-7 on extra points, and connected on a big 38 yard field goal in the final seconds of the first half to go into the break with a 36-19 lead. He also pinned the Steelhawks deep on kickoffs, not allowing them to have solid field position much of the night.
Week Four NAL Action kicks off this Saturday at 7pm EST as the Corpus Christi Rage head east to take on the Georgia Firebirds. On Sunday, the Columbus Lions head north to take on their rival Lehigh Valley Steelhawks for a 5pm tilt and the High Country Grizzlies host the Jacksonville Sharks at 7pm.
