Allentown, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (5-1) scored big in a victory over the Corpus Christi Rage (0-5) Saturday night in the PPL Center. Lehigh Valley put points on the board from every phase of the game and set a few franchise records in the process.
Corpus Christi would put the first points on the board as former ’Hawks quarterback, Jake Jablonski led them on a drive that ended in a 20 yard scoring pass to WR Alex Coleman, his first of two on the night. Lehigh Valley would answer with a touchdown pass themselves to OL/TE Brett Piekarski. The extra point would give them the lead and they wouldn’t look back.
The defense would get great pressure in the back field, forcing errant throws all night and recording a safety. Defensive linemen Tommy Dover and Tim Hume each recorded multiple sacks; many coming on key third or fourth down plays. Dover would tally a touchdown on a scoop and score, and Hume would get a strip sack in the endzone.
Special teams got in on the action as well. DB Rodney Hall Jr. returned a missed field goal for a touchdown just before the end of the first half. Then, midway through the third quarter, WR/KR Brandon Renford would return a kickoff all the way to pay dirt to add seven more points. It is Renfords second kick return touchdown on the year.
Offensively, WR Darius Prince had four touchdown receptions on six catches. Quarterback Warren Smith Jr. was nearly perfect on the night, completing all but one of his passes and throwing for seven touchdowns on his way to breaking the Steelhawks single season record of touchdown passes thrown (34) with four more games still to play. All this scoring led to the Steelhawks putting up 95 points in their victory, a franchise record. Final score: Lehigh Valley 95, Corpus Christi 28.
