JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Sharks have announced today that they have hired Damon Mason as their new Defensive Coordinator. The Sharks have simultaneously relieved Joey Smith of the same position.
Mason brings 13 years of playing experience as well as one year of coaching, most recently with the AFL’s New Orleans VooDoo in 2014 as their Defensive Coordinator and Special Teams Coach under Head Coach Pat O’Hara.
During his time as a player, Mason played Defensive Back with the Orlando Predators (1998-2001, 04, 05, 08, 10), New Jersey / Las Vegas Gladiators (2002-2003), Carolina Cobras (2004), Grand Rapids Rampage (2005), Austin Wranglers (2006-2007), Utah Blaze (2008), and ended his career with the New Orleans VooDoo (2011).
He also was three time Second-Team All-Arena (2000, 2001, 2002) and retired as the AFL career tackle leader (1009 tackles). During his career he also racked up 173 pass breakups, 47 interceptions and 21 forced fumbles. His best year came in 2006 with the 10-6 Austin Wranglers. Mason led the team with eight interceptions, 94.5 tackles and 22 pass breakups.
Prior to his playing and coaching career, Mason attended University of Southwestern Louisiana, now known as Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Canjuns, where he played defensive back and was the team’s kick and punt returner.
