48-31 loss puts Maine at 1-3

PORTLAND- The Maine Mammoths (1-3) hosted the Jacksonville Sharks (2-3) in a Cinco-de-Mayo match-up, which ultimately ended up in a Mammoths loss with a final score of 31-48.

Quarterback Jonathan Bane was 16-of-33 for the night with 153 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. When it comes to rushing, Bane rushed for times for 31 yards and one fumble. Thankfully, the fumble was recovered by Wide Receiver Edgar Poe for a gain of about four yards on the play. Speaking of Poe, he had three receptions for 24 yards and one touchdown. Derrick Macon  had four receptions for 40 yards. Devin Wilson had a great game, as he reeled in five catches for 57 yards and two touchdowns.

The Mammoths couldn’t get things going to start the game, as the Sharks got the ball first and killed over half of the first quarter. Luckily for the Mammoths, the defense forced a huge stop on fourth and three deep in the Mammoths territory. Unfortunately, the Mammoths offense couldn’t take advantage of the stop and gave Jacksonville the ball right back, but in Jacksonville’s territory.

To start the second quarter, the Mammoths allowed a quick touchdown, but forced a lot of pressure on the perfect kicker coming into this week. Sharks Kicker Brandon Behr was 8-for-8 on PAT’s prior to this game. The Mammoths forced him to miss three PAT’s on the night. The Mammoths scored three points in the second quarter, but it wasn’t enough to match the Sharks’ 26 points.

The Mammoths started the second half exactly how they wanted, as Bane found Wilson for a seven-yard touchdown to put the score at 10-26. The Sharks would then score to extend the gap, but they couldn’t convert on the two-point conversion after a bad snap from the center to the placeholder. The score at this point is 10-32 with Jacksonville on top. The quarter would end with a 17-32 score.

The Mammoths have been in this situation before, when they were down 15-39 to the Carolina Cobras. The Mammoths ended up just falling short 42-56. The thing that the Mammoths did that they would need to do in this game is finish strong and keep the ball moving. The Mammoths did just that as Bane rushed multiple times and averaged almost 10 yards per rush in the fourth quarter. The Mammoths defense, however, could not stop the Sharks offense. The onside kicks would give Jacksonville the ball, which allowed them to quickly score to give the Mammoths the ball. Unfortunately, the Mammoths would fall short again, as the score ended up being 31-48.

Players of the Game:

Offensive Player of the Game: FB Derrick Ross - nine rushes for 19 yards and three touchdowns; one reception for nine yards

Defensive Player of the Game: DB Tyree Robinson - one interception

Special Teams Player of the Game: DB Marvin Ross - one field goal return for 57-yards and one touchdown

The next Mammoths game is against the Massachusetts Pirates (3-1) at the DCU Center on May 12 at 7:00 pm (E.T.).
