The Massachusetts Pirates have reached an agreement with defensive end Roosevelt (RJ) Roberts for the 2019 season. Roberts appeared in four games with the Pirates last year and was impressive on the defensive front with seven and a half sacks and nine tackles for a loss. Roberts say’s disruption is his game.
“That’s my job, to get to the quarterback, put pressure on him and to have a relentless attitude while I’m on the field,” he said.
The Enterprise, Alabama native notched 11 solo tackles and assisted on four others for a total of 14 and a half. He also recovered one fumble and forced two, helping the Pirates to a plus seven turnover margin last season.
“I want to thank team President Jawad Yatim and his family for giving me this opportunity. All of the players are great teammates. It’s a good brotherhood as far as everyone being together and working on our craft and I feel like it’s a good vibe in Massachusetts,” he added.
Yatim likes Robert’s physical style.
"RJ was a guy that came in last season and made a strong impression on the coaching staff and myself. His ability to time up the snap is second to none in our league, extremely strong and tenacious. He has a great motor, looks the part and in my mind is a real diamond in the rough. In a small sample size last year he was extremely productive recording 7.5 sacks in a handful of games. He's out to prove a point this season and it’s good to have RJ back on the Pirate ship," he said.
The former Canadian Football League defensive lineman saw action with Saskatchewan in 2011-2012. Roberts began his arena football career in 2013 when he played in ten games for the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League. There he tallied 27 tackles with three sacks, forced two fumbles and recovered three more. 2015 saw the 6’4” 260 pounder return to the CFL and the Grey Cup Champion Edmonton Eskimos. That same season the Troy University product played with the Hudson Valley Fort of the Fall Experimental Football League. In 2016 he was drafted by Team Kirskey of Major League Football along with a stint with Sioux Falls in the Indoor Football League. Now he’s looking forward to the Pirates turning the corner in the National Arena League.
“Going into this season I will continue to work hard every day in the weight room, in practice
and focus on the little things one day at a time to just have another productive season as a team player. The main thing is to say positive. If we stay positive we’ll have another great season,” Roberts said.
