The Columbus Lions organization and Marte Sears have come to terms for the 2019 NAL season. Sears will add even more talent and a competitive edge to a Lions defensive roster that is shaping up to be one of the most dangerous units in all of the NAL. Originally from Fresno, California - this will be Sears' 3rd year with the Lions organization.
Marte Sears (6'4, 215 - Faulkner University) enters the 2019 NAL season - his 3rd of arena football - once again ready to take the league by storm after his 2018 season ended before it even began with an unfortunate injury. However, you do not need to look much further back to see how dominant he can be. Sears was voted to the 2017 All-NAL team as a Jack Linebacker after finishing 5th in the NAL in interceptions in only 6 games played. Despite joining the Lions mid-season, Sears still finished second on the team in interceptions (4) and led the team in total tackles per game in 2017. Likewise, Sears was instrumental in the Lions postseason run all the way to the NAL championship game.
Prior to his time with the Lions, Sears experienced a tremendous amount of his success in his collegiate career. Starring for one of the top NAIA programs in the nation, Faulkner University, Sears was a two-time 1st team All-MWC selection as a defensive back. His career was highlighted in 2014 with a AFCA 1st team All-American selection after finishing the year with 57 tackles and 6 interceptions, bringing the total up to 10 interceptions in his two year career with the Eagles. Immediately following his college career, Sears joined the Cleveland Browns of the NFL for a brief stint. Following his time with the Browns, Sears played for various Canadian Football League teams including the Edmonton Eskimos and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Stay tuned to see who the Lions will find next in their quest for the 2019 NAL championship!
