The Massachusetts Pirates professional arena football team in Worcester have signed former UCLA offensive lineman Kenny Lacy for the 2019 season. The 6’-4” 310 lb. native of Phoenix, AZ, missed the entire 2017 season with the Bruins as he underwent hip surgery. After not being selected in the NFL Draft, Lacy kept his options open.
“I did workout for a few teams but I was not able to get a deal signed. The Pirates reached out to me and offered an opportunity to go out there and prove myself and I’m the ultimate competitor so of course I took the opportunity,” he said.
As far as his health is concerned, Lacy say’s all of issues are behind him.
“Man I’m ready. I’m healthy, I’m clear. Every day I work on my strength, mobility, flexibility and change of direction. I’m excited and ready to go,” he added.
After redshirting in 2013, Lacy started in two games in 2014 and then saw action in 11 games in each of the next two seasons. In 2015 he blocked for running back Paul Perkins who rushed for over 1,000 yards and protected freshman quarterback Josh Rosen who was sacked just 14 times. In all, Lacy played in 26 games while starting 21. He admits missing 2017 was hard.
“That was definitely a tough time for me and my family but with persistence you work through it and now we have a chance to get back on the field and show what we can do,” he said.
This will be his first taste of arena football. What will he expect?
“To be honest I’m really excited about it. I really couldn’t say. I don’t know what to expect just yet, but I’m looking to learn and to adjust to the game quickly. I know it’s going to be a pass heavy game and I’m athletic enough to pass protect, so I’m looking forward to using my length and keeping the quarterback up. I’m definitely going to make it a point to break every game down into an individual match up; make it a real personal match up out there and win my individual game every week. That will be me doing my part to help the team win,” Lacy said.
Pirates President Jawad Yatim is happy to provide Lacy with the opportunity to succeed.
"Kenny is a great addition to the Pirates Organization as he brings an attitude and toughness to our offensive line which are traits I prioritize when recruiting my offensive front. He's got great size, he’s young, long, stout and has good feet. He keeps a good base underneath him. He’s aggressive and powerful at the initial point of contact and he finishes his blocks. He's got a mean streak to him that's apparent while watching film and he's hungry for this opportunity. He was starting on an offensive line at UCLA that allowed the second fewest sacks (in a season) as well as the third most rushing yards in school history as a sophomore in 2015 so the pedigree is certainly there. He had his senior year stripped away from him due to hip surgery, but he's on a mission to show everyone he's still the same Kenny and we are looking forward to providing him the opportunity to do so. We’re glad to have him." Yatim said.
