The Massachusetts Pirates professional arena football team in Worcester have re-signed defensive lineman/linebacker Tavarus Dantzler for the 2019 season.
Last season in eight games Dantzler (6’3, 250 lb.) had 19.5 tackles, five sacks and broke up two passes. Being one win away from the title game in the National Arena League last season is one of the biggest reasons why the former Bethune Cookman star is returning to Massachusetts.
“There’s a lot of unfinished business so being re-signed and picking up from last year where we left off is pretty big. That’s basically what everybody will play off of this season. Just the case of being so close a season ago and just wanting to get over the hump. We fell short of our goal. I feel like we’ve got a good shot this season,” he said.
Pirates General Manager and Director of Player Personnel Jawad Yatim knows first-hand what the Homestead, FL product can bring to the Pirates.
"TD was a college teammate of mine and he's always impressed me as an athlete and player. He's long, athletic, tenacious, very sound tackler, has violent hands, can cover ground and moves well sideline to sideline. He's also versatile being able to play both linebacker spots and defensive end. He has the respect of his teammates and coaches and we look forward to having him back here in Massachusetts," Yatim said.
To take that next step, this past off-season Dantzler, who signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent out of college, has been working on what he calls the small stuff which should pay big dividends.
“Just working on change of direction and being more physical with my hands. Just the small things. Small things make a big difference,” he said.
This season the Pirates will have a new Head Coach in Anthony Payton and a new Defensive Coordinator in Tim Shelley. Even with a new coaching staff Dantzler says it really should be business as usual when it comes getting the job done.
“It shouldn’t be a problem as long as everybody is on the same page,” he said optimistically.
Dantzler realizes that with maximum effort, the Pirates can achieve their goal of a championship and that will also help him continue his football journey and ascend to the next level in his career.
“Oh most defiantly. Just go out there on the field and give it your all. As long as you give it your all somebody will notice and recognize you. Just take care of what you can control and somebody will give you a shot at the next level.”
