The Massachusetts Pirates professional arena football team in Worcester has hired Steve Cully to coach their offensive line. The New York native played football at the University of Connecticut. He played professionally for seven years for NFL Europe, the Canadian Football League and the Arena Football League.
Cully has a lot of first-hand experience with Arena football. He knows the game comes at you quickly, and that’s what he wants to embed into his linemen's heads.
“Arena football is fast. You don’t have the pocket of the outdoor game. It’s a center, a guard, and a tight end. It’s only a three-man line so the quarterback is right there,” says Cully. “Everything is fast and upfield, and you have to be good with your hands and feet to stay in front of people.”
This is his first season undergoing a professional coaching role. However, in his eyes, instructing a group of professional players comes much more naturally.
“It’s different the way you treat the guys. You treat them like grown men whereas in college you have to stay on top of them over and over. These guys are professionals. They handle their business and come to work every day,” stated Cully. “They know what’s at stake, and everyone is looking to move up to the next level.”
Pirates head coach Anthony Payton loves the addition of Cully because he understands how knowledgeable Cully is in regards to Arena Football.
“I have been in this game for a long time, and to have someone speaking the same language that I speak is so refreshing. A lot of guys come from the IFL and these other indoor leagues but the Arena Football League is where it started, and he was one of those guys that played when I played,” Payton adds. “We finish each other's sentences because we have been in that culture before. When I listen to Cully speak I pick up on things that I’ve always wanted to learn. I don’t like being the smartest guy in the room, so when it comes to the lineman I am all ears.”
