After back-to-back losses against the defending champion Carolina Cobras, the Pirates (0-2) look to catch their first victory of the season at home against the Orlando Predators (1-1) this Saturday, April 27th.
Coming into the contest, the key matchup to watch is Pirates WR Mardy Gilyard and Predators WR LJ Castile. Through two games the speedy Gilyard has racked up 111 yards and four touchdowns. The Pirates have totaled 44 points in the first two weeks of the season and Gilyard is credited for over half of those scores. On the other hand, Orlando’s Castile has been lighting up the scoreboard with his 109 yards and seven touchdowns to begin the season.
As far as the quarterbacks go, the Predators have the advantage so far this season. QB Kyle Israel has lead his offense to 73 total points on 438 yards passing and seven throwing scores and four interceptions. MVP Sean Brackett has gotten off to a shaky start as he has thrown for 288 yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions.
On the defensive side of the ball defensive backs Lubern Figaro and Roman Tatum have been extremely stingy when throws come their way. Figaro has five tackles and seven pass breakups against Tatum’s eight-and-a-half total tackles and five pass breakups.
If special teams become the main factor of the game, then the Pirates have the upper hand in that department. The explosive Gilyard has totaled 130 kickoff return yards this season, while WR Edward Victorian of the Predators has 81 total return yards.
Key stats to note: The Predators are two of thirteen on third down so far this year. Orlando has also allowed their first two opponents to go nine for nine in the red zone. The Massachusetts Pirates are members of the National Arena League (NAL).
