The Massachusetts Pirates have signed three players to bolster their roster before facing the New York Streets in White Plains (NY) Monday afternoon. Two who will join the defensive side of the ball played with the team last season. Mike Weaver, former standout kicker at Wake Forrest, also joins the team.
Weaver, who makes his home in Pine City, NY, was a two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer. Weaver saw action for the Demon Deacons from 2014-2017. As a junior he received first team All-ACC honors making all 28 of his extra points and connecting on 21 of 27 field goals. As a senior, Weaver was on the Lou Groza Award pre-season watch list. He finished 2017 with 115 points to set a single season school record while leading the ACC in scoring. He also totaled 13 points in the Belk Bowl, establishing a record going seven for seven on PAT’s. Weaver set Wake Forrest’s seasonal records with 56 extra point attempts and with 52 extra points made. After earning second team All-ACC honors he was contacted by several NFL teams but did not sign a contract. He also tried out for teams in the Alliance of American Football and played in the Your Call League. Earlier this month he signed with the Baltimore Brigade of the Arena Football League.
The Pirates also have brought back defensive end Roosevelt (RJ) Roberts. Roberts, from Enterprise, AL, appeared in four games with the Pirates last year and was impressive on the defensive front with seven and a half sacks and nine tackles for a loss. Roberts started this season with the Philadelphia Soul in the Arena Football League.
The former Canadian Football League defensive lineman saw action with Saskatchewan in 2011-2012. Roberts began his arena football career in 2013 when he played in ten games for the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League. There he tallied 27 tackles with three sacks, forced two fumbles and recovered three more. 2015 saw the 6’4” 260 pounder return to the CFL and the Grey Cup Champion Edmonton Eskimos. That same season the Troy University product played with the Hudson Valley Fort of the Fall Experimental Football League. In 2016 he was drafted by Team Kirskey of Major League Football along with a stint with Sioux Falls in the Indoor Football League.
Additionally, defensive back Khalid Wooten has rejoined the Pirates. Wooten appeared in four regular season games and the Pirates playoff game last season. He tallied 12 tackles with one pass broken up and a 27 yard interception return for a touchdown vs. Lehigh Valley.
Wooten, (5’-11” 200 lbs.) who played his college ball at the University of Nevada, was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the sixth round of the 2013 National Football League draft. The San Bernardino, CA native was with Tennessee for parts of three seasons seeing action in three games with the Titans in 2014. In 2016 he played with Montreal in the Canadian Football League. Wooten played six games with Hamilton in 2017 and later was signed by the Toronto Argonauts.
