All-NAL Fullback Alstevis Squirewell Returns to the Shark Tank
JACKSONVILLE – The 2019 National Arena League Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced today the re-signing of All-NAL fullback Alstevis Squirewell. Squirewell (6’0, 265) has signed with the Jacksonville Sharks for his second season of arena football and second season with the Sharks. Squirewell is the fourth returning player from the 2019 championship roster as Jacksonville announced the return of quarterback Mike Fafaul, offensive lineman Mike Williams, and linebacker/fullback Zack Brown.
Last season, Squirewell led the NAL with 60 rushes for 189 yards and 11 touchdowns becoming the only fullback in the NAL to reach double digits touchdowns in 2019. As one of the most explosive rushers in the NAL, Squirewell averaged 3.2 yards per carry and proved to be versatile on offense catching seven passes for 70 yards and one touchdown reception. During the regular season, Squirewell was a difference-maker on the road against the Massachusetts Pirates on July 13. In a back & forth brawl for the lead, Squirewell had a break out performance with six carries for 40 yards and two rushing touchdowns that helped the Sharks post a 59-42 victory over the Pirates. In the postseason, Squirewell caught a crucial two-point conversion in the championship game that helped spark the Sharks comeback victory over the Cobras. Following the end of the 2019 season, Squirewell received First Team All-NAL honors. Prior to the Sharks, Squirewell spent time with the Green Bay Packers in 2016 as a member of their rookie minicamp roster.
In college, Squirewell was a defensive lineman for Newberry College, a Division II school in Newberry, South Carolina. During his career at Newberry College, he made 154 tackles, forced 13 sacks, had two interceptions, broke up four passes, and blocked a kick. His college accolades include being named an ECAAC All-Star, First Team D2CCA All-Super Region II defensive lineman, Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-Super Region II defensive linemen, and a two-time First Team All-South Atlantic Conference defensive lineman.
Squirewell is from Great Falls, SC, and attended Great Falls High School, where he played both fullback and defensive line. In two seasons, he rushed for 1,137 yards and 15 touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, Squirewell racked up 104 tackles, four sacks, and two interceptions.
