FORMER AUBURN DL HEADS TO COLUMBUS

May 5, 2021                                                                                        by Alex Husting

The Columbus Lions are continuing to bolster their roster as they prepare for the 2021 season and they have made yet another signing this week. The Lions have added Maurice Swain Jr., a defensive tackle from Auburn to the defensive front. Swain Jr. is a local player from West Point, Georgia and played Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College before joining the Tigers.

Swain Jr. played two years at the JUCO level and his team was ranked 7th nationally during his final year and he was a Top-40 JUCO prospect after his second year. The 6’5” 314 pound lineman headed to the Loveliest Village on the Plains in 2015 and played out the last two years of his eligibility, becoming one of the veteran leaders on the defensive front during his senior season.

Following two years with the Tigers, Swain Jr. headed to the NFL and entered the NFL draft. While he was not drafted, he was signed by the Detroit Lions shortly after the draft. After a few weeks in camp he left Detroit and searched for another team. Just before preseason began in 2017, the Kansas City Chiefs picked him up and he got some playing time in that preseason before leaving Kansas City as well.

Now, nearly four years after the 2017 NFL Draft, Maurice Swain Jr. is back in professional football with the Columbus Lions. Swain Jr. brings the experience of playing in JUCO and the SEC with him to Columbus as he looks to compete for a spot on the Lions’ defensive heading into the 2021 season.
