Lions Sign UTEP Standout
Following the signing of two quarterbacks, the Columbus Lions are looking to improve the team’s ability to protect the quarterbacks. Jerrod Brooks, a offensive lineman from the UTEP, was signed by the Lions this past week. Brooks went to Seagoville high school in Dallas, Texas before joining the Miners.
In his time at Seagoville, the offense was very successful. During his senior season, Seagoville was second in their district 265 rushing yards per game and 35 touchdowns. They were also second in the district in scoring that year with 426 points in only 11 games. Brooks was named to the All-District 11-4A team that year as Seagoville advanced to the 2013 UIL State Football Playoffs.
Brooks decided to redshirt during his freshman year UTEP and eventually saw playing time toward the end of his redshirt freshman season, playing left tackle for the last four games of the season. Brooks would play in 33 games over the next 3 years at UTEP and despite the team struggling overall, Brooks provided consistent play for an offensive line that produced a solid rushing attack.
“One of our first priorities this off season was going to be to protect the QB,” Said Head Coach Jason Gibson. “Jerrod is a next level player and we look forward to seeing him in a Lions uniform.” Brooks’ consistency and experience could earn him a starting job on the Lions’ offensive line and he is a player that fans should keep an eye on during camp.
