Week 10 Preview: Cobras vs. Warbirds

Cobras Look to Rebound on Road in West Texas

GREENSBORO, NC –  The (4-2) Carolina Cobras head to Texas to take on the West Texas Warbirds (2-5) this game serves a great rebound opportunity for the Cobras as they suffered their first loss at home this season against their in-state rival the Fayetteville Mustangs (4-3) last weekend in a game where the Cobras only put up two points in the first quarter and went scoreless in the fourth during the 55-37 defeat. Despite the loss, Coach Fuller has the Cobras in great shape with little injuries and  standing strong at 4-2 (3rd place in the NAL). A good win this week on the road will help the Cobras as only seven weeks remain in the regular season. If the Cobras can clinch a home playoff berth with their record at home the Carolina Cobras may have a good shot at another NAL championship game. To do that, the Cobras have to face a tough Warbirds team this weekend the same team that narrowly lost to the 5-2 Jacksonville Sharks as the West Texas battled to finish 58-42 against Jacksonville who were expecting to blowout the two-win Texas team. Carolina can expect a close game with Coach Smith and his Warbirds reloading for this week with new talent settling into West Texas.

It is a fact, week by week the Warbirds have gotten better from defeating the Predators two weeks ago to being three points away from beating the #1 ranked San Antonio Gunslingers in a 38-36 Texas showdown in Odessa, TX. If the Cobras want to come out of the long road trip with a win, they have to ignore the 2-5 Warbird record and focus on beating them quarter after quarter. A victory for Carolina will mean the Cobras biggest stars need to shine this week as the Warbirds continue to put the puzzle pieces together with their team. Receiver Lance Evans leads the Cobras in receptions (34) and in touchdown catches (6) if Lance can have another breakout game the Cobras may land the points they need as the Warbirds have won every game they’ve played when they kept opponents under 38, last week the Cobras scored 35 points. A big part of the offense rests on the shoulders of the Cobras quarterback, Malik Henry who is having his best season as a Cobra with 15 total touchdowns this season allowing only three sacks in six games. However, last week Henry struggled throwing two interceptions, the most he’s had all season. With a long road trip to regroup and fresh new opponent Cobra Nation will hope to see the Cobras versatile quarterback back the high level play he’s showcased the majority of the 2023 season. On defense the Cobras have to get after the quarterback the last time Carolina faced the Warbirds it was the Cobras defense made the difference forcing two forced fumbles and three interceptions as defensive back Kenny Veal pulled off a hat trick by having one of the best games by any defensive back in the NAL this year. Special teams may be the difference in this game as both teams have a solid kicking game between the Cobras TC Stevens and Warbirds Kevin Didio-Weber both special teams stars have had multiple deuce games this year and gained player of the week awards. With likely a close score game a deuce or a kick return for a touchdown may be what puts the Cobras in the win column this week. Even with the great performances from players remember the Cobras only beat the Warbirds 64-62 earlier this year, let’s see what happens this time around in week 10.
